We spent days reading every detail we could find: the night vision footage, the theories about inside help, even the speculation that the jewels might have already been smuggled out of France before the alarm ever sounded. Somewhere between the news articles and the chaos, inspiration struck: what if we built a murder mystery party that captured that same feeling—high stakes, elegant setting, impossible odds—but let players be the ones to outsmart the thieves?
Turning Real History Into Playable Fiction
Every Megan’s Mysteries game starts with a question. For this one, it was simple: what happens when brilliance and betrayal share the same room? The Louvre itself became our muse. From the glass pyramid to the quiet, echoing halls of the Denon Wing, every detail of its architecture carries a tension between beauty and danger.
We wanted our Louvre mystery game to reflect that duality—elegance above the surface, secrets underneath. While most of our mysteries (like our Museum Murder Mystery Party) celebrate discovery and deduction, this one leans into misdirection and moral gray areas. It’s less about catching the culprit and more about deciding who you can trust when everyone’s playing their own angle.
The Art of Designing a Heist
Creating a believable heist isn’t about blueprints or lockpicks—it’s about tension. The fun comes from what players don’t know. So, we asked ourselves: how do you design a game where everyone thinks they’re winning until they realize they’ve been set up?
That’s where we leaned on real museum logistics. We studied how exhibits rotate, how artifacts are cataloged, how restoration labs work behind the scenes. Then we used that realism to craft twists that make sense. Players might overhear a conversation about shipment manifests, or discover an “empty frame” that was never officially logged. Every clue had to feel authentic enough that players could say, “Yeah, that could happen.”
Balancing Glamour and Grit
Heist stories walk a fine line—they’re sleek, but they’re also dangerous. We didn’t want players just pretending to steal something valuable; we wanted them to feel the pressure of being caught. That meant setting the story not in the dusty catacombs of the museum, but in its after-hours splendor: crystal chandeliers, velvet ropes, priceless art under dim security lights.
We even choreographed the timing of events to echo a real heist’s pacing: calm, then chaos, then a sudden silence where everyone questions who betrayed whom. The result? A night that feels cinematic without needing a single prop worth more than twenty bucks.

That’s how we knew the balance of suspense and satisfaction was right.

About 15% into development, we realized something: a good heist isn’t linear. It’s layered. So we added a moment that flips the entire story halfway through. Without giving anything away, let’s just say players will suddenly question who exactly they can trust.
